Tirso Ornelas rode a 12-game hitting streak with Triple-A El Paso to a third straight Padres On Deck: Player of the Week award.

The Tijuana native and №30 Padres’ prospect, is joined on the POD: Players of the Week list by starting pitchers Ryan Bergert (Double-A San Antonio) and Austin Krob (High Single-A Fort Wayne), outfielder Nick Vogt (Single-A Lake Elsinore) and middle infielder Ismael Javier of the Dominican Summer League Padres.

The Padres On Deck: Players of the Week for August 22–28:

Left fielder Tirso Ornelas (Triple-A El Paso) — Going back to when he was with Double-A San Antonio — where he won the first of his three straight POD: Player of the Week awards — Ornelas is on a 17-game hitting streak. He was 8-for-26 last week with three doubles, a home run, a RBI and six runs scored for a .308 batting average and on-base percentage and a .538 slugging percentage for a .847 OPS. During his 12-game hitting streak with El Paso, the 23-year-old 6-foot-2, 200-pound, left-handed hitter is 20-for-48 (.417) with six doubles, two home runs, four RBIs, three walks and 12 runs scored for a .451/.667/1.119 slash line. He is now hitting .298 at El Paso with seven doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs in 32 games with a .368/.430/.797 slash line.

Right-handed starting pitcher Ryan Bergert (Double-A San Antonio) — The Padres’ №16 prospect allowed three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in six scoreless innings in his only start against Amarillo last week. Over his last two starts, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Bergert has worked 11 2/3 scoreless innings while giving up five hits and four walks with 13 strikeouts. He is 1–2 with a 2.45 earned run average and a 1.121 WHIP in seven appearances (six starts) at San Antonio. Between High-A and Double-A this season, Bergert is 6–4 with a 2.57 ERA, a 1.162 WHIP and a .195 opponents’ batting average with 114 strikeouts in 94 1/3 innings. Bergert 23, was the Padres’ sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft out of West Virginia University.

Left-handed starting pitcher Austin Krob (High Single-A Fort Wayne) — The 23-year-old Krob was the Padres’ 12th-round pick in the 2022 draft out of TCU. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Krob allowed one run on five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings last week. In his past two starts, Krob has given up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and four walks with 15 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings. Krob is 4–3 with a 3.28 ERA and a 1.393 WHIP in nine starts at High Single-A. Between Single-A Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne this season, Krob is 4–4 in 20 games (19 starts) with a 2.79 ERA, a 1.376 WHIP and a .254 opponents’ batting average.

Right fielder Nick Vogt (Single-A Lake Elsinore) — The 23-year-old Vogt was the Padres’ seventh-round pick in the 2022 draft out of UC Santa Barbara. Vogt, who can play all three outfield positions, was 10-for-24 (.417) last week with four doubles, a triple, three RBIs, two walks and four runs scored for the Storm for a .462 on-base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage for a 1.129 OPS. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Vogt has hit .260 for the Storm this season with 16 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 30 RBIs and 41 runs scored in 69 games for Lake Elsinore this season for a .343/.422/.765 slash line.

Shortstop/second baseman Ismael Javier (Dominican Summer League) — The 5-foot-8, 160-pound switch-hitter turned 18 on Aug. 27. Last week, during two rounds of the Dominican Summer League playoffs, the native of the Dominican Republic hit safely in all five games, going 7-for-15 with two doubles, a triple, seven RBIs, five walks, a stolen base and five runs scored for a .467 batting average, a .600 on-base percentage and a .733 slugging percentage for a 1.400 OPS. It’s the second straight POD: Player of the Week honor for Javier, who had 51 hits in 51 regular season games in the DSL with eight doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 47 RBIs, eight stolen bases and 42 runs for a .280/.386/.506/.892 slash line.
